Dr. Lain with the John L. Sisco Award

Well done, Dr. Lain! Dr. Brian Lain, Professor in the Department of Communication Studies and director of debate, was awarded the John L. Sisco Excellence in Teaching Award by the Southern States Communication Association. This annual award honors an SSCA member who has taught at least ten years and consistently demonstrates excellence in teaching communication.

Dr. Lain is known for his unique and innovative courses and activities, encouraging students to think beyond the classroom. He has twice received the ‘Fessor Graham Award, the highest honor the student body at UNT can bestow on a professor, in recognition of his outstanding service to students.  He was also designated a University Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2022.

Dr. Suzanne Enck, chair of the Department of Communication Studies, said, “In a department filled with talented and dedicated pedagogues, Brian stands out in his capacity to deliver engaged, challenging, student-centered content that has evolved alongside the needs of our students, changes in higher education, and, most recently, the bevy of challenges in teaching after a global pandemic.  His dedication to pedagogical excellence expands well beyond the traditional confines of the classroom and he takes seriously the importance of reaching students across a wide range of life experiences, backgrounds, and academic interests.”

Congratulations, Dr. Lain! We are lucky to have such a dedicated teacher and mentor in our department.
