The University of North Texas Debate Team achieved outstanding success in the Junior Varsity Division placing 2nd at the 60th Owen L. Coon Memorial Debate Tournament, hosted September 6–8 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Widely regarded as one of the most competitive tournaments of the fall semester, the Owen L. Coon brings together elite debate programs from across the nation to compete in rigorous rounds of policy debate.

Representing UNT in the Junior Varsity division, the team of Naren Ganesh, TAMS, and Emanuel Vargas, first year, International Studies, advanced to the final round, defeating nationally ranked opponents from Emory University and Missouri State University along the way. Although competing virtually from UNT, their remarkable run through elimination rounds showcased UNT’s reputation for excellence and resilience in one of the most challenging competitive environments in intercollegiate debate.

Tournament Highlights

  • Quarterfinals Triumph: They advanced past Emory University in a tightly contested debate.
  • Semifinals Victory: Ganesh and Vargas secured a decisive win over Missouri State University's top-ranked team.
  • Final Round Appearance: UNT earned a spot in the championship debate, finishing as finalists against Georgetown University.

In addition to team success, both Ganesh and Vargas received high individual speaker points throughout preliminary rounds, underscoring their skill as advocates and the strength of UNT’s program. Vargas was named the junior varsity division’s third best speaker.
