Basic Course Director
The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Texas invites applications for a Basic Communication Course Director beginning spring (January) 2014. The successful candidate will be appointed as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer depending on qualifications and experience (three-year renewable contract with the possibility of extending the initial appointment as well as promotion).
QUALIFICATIONS: All applicants must meet the following criteria: (1) A Masters degree in communication studies or closely related field at the time of appointment, (2) documented experience teaching introductory level communication studies courses, and (3) a record of scholarly activity (i.e., presentations at conferences) and/or published research. A PhD or ABD is preferred, as is a record of scholarly activities that includes critical communication pedagogy. Experience in supervising teaching assistants and/or adjuncts is also preferred. A record of external funding or potential for attracting external funding is desired.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The faculty member will coordinate departmental graduate teaching assistant orientation; provide ongoing supervision, evaluation, and mentoring of graduate teaching assistants; and coordinate a multi-section basic course that utilizes a blended teaching approach incorporating online and face-to-face instruction; and provide ongoing assessment of the introductory course. In addition to these duties, the faculty member will teach two additional courses per semester in an area related to his or her disciplinary expertise and provide service to the department, college, and university. If the faculty member possesses a PhD, s/he will have the opportunity to teach graduate courses and serve on graduate advisory committees.
THE DEPARTMENT: UNT's Department of Communication Studies is a collegial and growing program with strong traditions in interpersonal and organizational communication, performance studies, and rhetorical studies that offers BA and MA/MS degrees. The graduate faculty has been enhanced in recent years, and the administration has committed to ongoing programmatic expansion by supporting a Student Learning Center, a Performance Space, a Communication & Social Influence Research Office, and a Computer-mediated Communication Research Laboratory.
