Dr. Brian Lain judges for Jack and Jill of America, Inc.

On October 24, Dr. Brian Lain served as a judge for the Denton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. along with UNT Librarian Leta Nagandhi and El Centro College Professor Olivia Fraser-Kerr. The debate, which pitted groups of middle school youth against one another, concerned a proposition about making school uniforms mandatory nationwide. Jack and Jill of America, Inc. (http://www.jack-and-jill.org/) is nationwide organization of mothers to provide "social, cultural, and educational opportunities for youth between the ages of two and nineteen." The organization was founded in 1938 in Philadelphia and now boasts over 220 chapters representing over 30,000 family members. The debate was part of an educational program focused on teaching advocacy and presentation skills to middle school students and was held on the campus of UNT. Dr. Lain served as one of three judges for the event and gave the middle school students (about 20 in attendance) tips on debating after they watched segments of the movie The Great Debaters.
